Bridesmaids Gifts & Wedding Makeup Ideas: Getting Cheeky!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Some of the Heather’s Glen staff went to Los Angeles last month to do a little wedding research.  Brides are going vintage and glamorous, and where else could we discover what warrants Old Hollywood style and glamour than Rodeo Drive?  That, and Heather won tickets to the Ellen Show!

So there I was, at the MAC counter, paying for the plum and gold eyeshadows that I simply had to have for my Ellen outfit, when I saw it:  “Et tu, Bouquet?”  THAT WAS THE NAME OF THE EYESHADOW!  A frosty, pale, pinkish-gold.  My gorgeous friend Zahrah (a fellow cosmetic connoisseur) immediately popped into my head.  Zahrah loathes the bouquet toss at weddings, because she finds the tradition insulting.  Betraying, perhaps?  If you know me, you know that one of my dream jobs would be to name cosmetic colors.  This eyeshadow shade was so clever I couldn’t get over it.  I hope that when Zahrah gets married, she gives all of her bridesmaids their own “Et tu, Bouquet?”  A nod to Shakespeare never disappoints!

A lot of brides at Heather’s Glen ask me about bridesmaid gift ideas.  I typically tell them to make it personal, thoughtful, and useful.  Something very “you,” that you’d want to share with them.  For example, my bridesmaids all know how much I love makeup, so their gifts were tucked into Kate Spade cosmetic cases.  Another fun gift would be Philosophy’s The Bridal Party shower gel set, including 3 scents: Wedding Cake, Bubbly, and Bridal Bouquet.  You want your bridesmaids to smell good, haha! “Bouquet Dive,” “Marry Up,” and “Pre nup” are some great, flattering colors that Benefit offers for lips and eyes.  Essie boasts a huge line of nail colors for weddings.  “Bachelorette Bash” and “Flower Girl” are great for the gals dutifully honoring you, while “Tie the Knot” is sweet for the bride.  For all those superstitious brides, avoid “Starter Wife,” and usher luck into your future with “No Pre-Nup” manicures.  A wonderful cheek stain can be found through Tarte, called “Blushing Bride.”  It’s plum colored and scented (yummy!), and has tons of acai extracts, for those jumping on the popular berry’s bandwagon.

Speaking of scents, as a bride, don’t forego the most nostalgic of all of our senses on your wedding day: olfactory!  A specific scent can bring you back to a memory like nothing else can.  Pick a perfume for your special day, and wear it on anniversaries and special dates later to take you back to your wedding day.  A new bridal pick is Dolce & Gabbana The One, while classic favorites are Vera Wang and Estee Lauder Beautiful.  (Our coordinator Lela will only wear Beautiful; she swears it’s the only perfume that doesn’t give her husband a sneezing fit).  Beautiful has new editions like Love and Sheer, so try those as well.

I once read in a wedding magazine that when you come down the aisle, the number one thing your future husband wants to see is YOU.  The last thing he wants to see?  A drag queen.  So have fun with makeup, share with your girls, but don’t go overboard!
