The Gown After the Wedding: To sell, to keep, to donate?

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Hello my darling readers!  Hello my Heather’s Glen brides!  Hello my future Heather’s Glen brides!

I have a question.  What’re my Spring and Summer brides doing with their gowns now that they’re married?  Are you selling it?  Are you keeping it to pass down as an heirloom?  Are you donating it to be auctioned for a good cause, or simply giving it away?  Perhaps having it sewn into a christening gown for a baby?

Or, are you having a “trash the dress” session with your photog?  I wanna see some dresses trashed!  If you’re doing so, let me know.  I’d love to spotlight it!

Also, please check out Brides Against Breast Cancer at www.makingmemories.org.  A generous donation of your gown to the organization makes wonderful things possible.  The gown is resold to brides at a fraction of the cost of a new gown, and the money is used for breast cancer cure research.  A gal gets a gorgeous gown at a bargain, while both of you are contributing to an important cause.  What could be better than that?

Enjoying the Engagement

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

A lot of people get engaged, and then hit the ground running planning the wedding.  Before you know it, months have gone by, and you’re married, and you realize the engagement went by so quickly!

I always encourage brides to enjoy their engagement.  All too often a couple will get so busy with making wedding arrangements that they miss out a special time in their relationship that they’ll never get back again.  Think about it:  once you’re married, you’ll never just be “engaged” again!

So I really want to urge couples to do more than just take engagement portraits and be done with it.  If someone offers to throw an engagement party, take them up on it!  Take some time to get your nails done often because you won’t always be throwing out the left hand to show off your new sparkle! Also, remember to keep the courtship going.  Continue going on actual dates.  As far as wedding planning is concerned, enjoy the moments you spend with girlfriends, moms, sisters, future mother in laws, your future groom when you do special things like cake-tastings and trying on gowns.

This is a time in your life that you’ll never get back.  Once the marriage begins, the engagement is officially over, so make the most of it!

Twogether in Texas: Learn to Love for Life

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

I know I write most of my blogs about wedding fun stuff.  You know, shoes, makeup, birdcage veils, etc.  But I am also in the know when it comes to practical wedding stuff as well!  I promise to try to share that a little more often.

No time like the present, right?  I don’t know how many of you know this, but effective last September, a couple can get their marriage license for free if they take an eight-hour pre-marital prep course.  And the last thing you want to fork over before the wedding is an extra $30-$60 bucks.  That’s honeymoon money!

Okay, so I know what you’re thinking.  “We don’t need counseling!”  Maybe you’ve already decided who cooks and who does the dishes; you’ve already planned on two separate toothpastes because one of you likes the cap on with it rolled, and the other squeezes from the middle of the tube; perhaps you’ve even discussed how much of your incomes you’ll put into savings.  But guess what:  marriage isn’t what you expect it to be.  And I know you’re tired of hearing that, but it’s true!  Two people go into a marriage with different expectations.  It’s good to get those expectations out on the table!  That’s just one of the things you’ll discuss in a marriage workshop.

These FREE workshops that are available are called Twogether in Texas -Learn to love for life.  They are offered all over Texas.  It’s not a series of boring lectures, either.  You’re with other couples and instructors lead the discussions.  Topics cover managing stress, effective communication, supporting each other, healthy marriage life, and fun and friendship.

I strongly recommend that you at least check out when and where the classes are.  It couldn’t hurt, could it?  For Twogether in Texas in Montgomery, Walker, and Waller County, call 936.294.4129 or check out www.shsu.edu/twogether.

Happy Wedding Shoe Shopping!

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

I mentioned in an earlier post about a couple that married here at Heather’s Glen last summer. The bride wore a ruby red wedding gown, and her groom wore a white tux with red patent leather shoes. Remember? Well I’m seeing a lot of brides go bold (not so often in their wedding gown), but in their shoes! Bright pink to match the bridesmaids, royal blue for “something blue,” even emerald green for good luck. And let me tell you, I am loving this trend! I wish I had worn colored shoes myself. Instead, I did the typical match the dress shoes. Peep-toe pumps in ivory. But how fun would it have been to have some bling on it? Or a feminine bow? What I like about this trend is that not everyone sees your shoes, depending on your gown, so they can be a little bit of a secret if you really go crazy. Otherwise, I think it’s a great, whimsical touch. And who doesn’t want a bit of whimsy on that special day? Check out some pictures below of some wedding shoe ideas!

Let’s start with something that makes us all feel good. And I know I reference this a lot, but come on- how many of you cried when Carrie finally married Big? And I present to you Manolo Blahnik’s “Something Blue” Satin Pump:

And for my next trick, I will show you something a bit more vampy. Perhaps for all you True Blood and Twilight fans? Say “oui” in French shoe designer Christian Louboutin’s peep-toe pump in Rouge. Nice for Fall, right?

Remember Ralph from the Simpson’s? Remember his Valentine that said “I choo-choo-choose you”? Choose your husband in these flashy Jimmy Choo’s. They’re not so much colorful as fabulous.

And finally, I can’t write this blog without mentioning Cole Haan’s new bridal footwear collection. What’s special about these shoes is the Nike Air technology concealed in the heal and toe of the shoe. If you’re planning on dancing the night away, this is the shoe for you:

Wedding Registry: Fine China

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Does anyone else get really excited about fine bone china?  I do!

I can’t describe the feeling I get when I’m invited to a wedding and I get to shop a couple’s registry.  I particularly enjoy perusing the choice of china.  I’m not quite sure what it is that attracts me so much: the fact that it has to do with food, the style of it, or that it is a symbol of special occasions to come!  My own china selection experience was a thrill.  I couldn’t wait to get into Macy’s and decide on the plates that my husband and I, and our future children, would eat off of every Thanksgiving and Christmas and Easter for the rest of our lives!  I first chose a simple Waterford design: white with silver accents, called Newgrange.  I felt it was classic, simple, and elegant, and would go with any tablecloth ever made.  While this seemed to be the most practical choice, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of Wedgwood’s India, a yellow, green, and pale blue flowery style.  It seemed like such a happy design.  After a couple of days of scrolling down my registry online from home, and wistfully clicking on “India,” I went back to Macy’s to change my selection.  I didn’t want to choose the safe and practical china.  If I was going to use this on special occasions for the rest of my married life, I wanted to serve on something that made me happy and excited to see it each time I used it.

So.  I’ve been married for ten months.  I’ve used our china once, about three weeks ago.  It was not Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter.  I was not having a dinner party or entertaining friends.  It was, however, a special occasion.  What were my husband and I celebrating, you ask?  The fact that I had time to prepare a hot dinner for the two of us, and that we had the time to sit and enjoy it together.  With the two of us working full-time, this was certainly a special occasion!  Which reminded me something Heather always says. “Life’s too short to not use the good china.”  While I always understood that as an analogy to treat each day as a special occasion in itself, it’s got me wondering if I should take the expression a bit more literally and use the good china more often!  What could it hurt?

When choosing your china, make sure you pick something that reflects your personal style, and not your sister’s or mother-in-law’s (unless, of course, you have the same taste-then by all means…).  China is a generous and kind gift that your loved ones purchase for you and your husband as you unite your lives.  Use it often, because each day is a special occasion!

Vintage Wedding Trends

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

How many of you participated in the tradition: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”?  Lela and I have noted that “something old” has become quite popular- brides are going vintage-happy in their weddings!

Vintage is mostly found currently in wedding attire.  Women are opting for champagne, gold, and ivory gowns over the previously-so-popular stark white.  French buttons, lace, and pearls have replaced out-dated beading, sequins, and satin.  Instead of tiaras, we’ve seen a lot of bird cage veils atop brides’ intricate updos, with deep red lipstick peeking out on their faces.  Gloves are coming back, but only the short wrist ones.

Rings have also become quite popular in vintage style.  These can be found described as “antique,” and are often channel set diamonds or filigree designed, and almost always white gold, palladium, or platinum.  I see less and less of the classic solitaire, or yellow gold, and more and more of a cushion cut with smaller diamonds surrounding it.  One very vintage solitaire has stood the test of time, however, the emerald cut diamond (my personal favorite).

I wonder about this vintage trend.  While it is so reminiscent of my grandparents’ generation, I can’t help but remember so many peoples’ comments that our economic recession mirrors the depression of the 20’s and 30’s.  No one can deny that anything vintage looks glamorous and expensive, so I wonder if the “antique” bride might be channeling some of the attitude of a Roaring Twenties bride.

Either way, anything vintage is en vogue, so glam it up!

Justin & Kelli: July 25th 2009

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Justin and Kelli met in April of 2003, as Kelli was walking her new puppy: a toy poodle.  As she was approaching her apartment, the tiny dog slipped right through her leash and made a beeline for a nearby apartment balcony.  Kelli chased after the dog, and found her in the arms of her future husband.  They began chatting, and he asked her out for that evening.  The two dated for six years before getting engaged.   “After six years of dating, we were ready to be married!” Kelli exclaims.  Kelli had always dreamed of a summer garden wedding, but knew that because of the Texas heat, her chances of finding the perfect (and comfortable!) location were slim.  A trip to Conroe to check out Heather’s Glen turned out to provide the venue she had dreamed of.  “As we stood at the front of the chapel, all you could see were trees and flowers.  It was as if we were standing in a garden.  It was perfect!  The chapel with its large windows overlooking the garden area was just the compromise that we needed.  We were able to have an indoor wedding ceremony and an outdoor garden reception, with enough versatility to comfortably accommodate all of our family and friends,” Kelli recalls.

Kelli had the perfect groom and perfect venue, and now it was time to plan the perfect wedding!  She chose black with pool blue for her wedding colors.  Gown shopping was successful.  “I selected an ivory gown with a long pool blue sash from David’s Bridal.  The detailed embroidery and beadwork that adorned the dress and sash, paired with the bold use of color, made for a contemporary twist to the traditional and I loved it!”  Her bridesmaids were in tea-length black satin, with pool blue sashes and peek-a-boo slips.  A unique touch to Kelli and Justin’s wedding was a male attendant on the bride’s side.  He called himself the “bridesman,” and wore a black tux with black shirt and vest, and a pool blue tie and pocket silk.  The groomsmen wore black Calvin Klein single button tuxedos with ivory shirts and black vests and pool blue pocket silks.  Justin himself wore the same style, but with an ivory vest and pocket silk.

With attire chosen, flowers and cakes were to be determined.  “Our flowers were strikingly gorgeous!” exclaims Kelli.  Cheryl of Cheryl’s Flowers was the mastermind behind the creations.  Star gazer lilies, black magic roses, purple dahlias, blue delphinium and purple lisanthus with peacock feather accents made up her bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, and centerpieces.  The flowers even decorated pews in paper cones hung with a pearl strand.  The colors and blooms themselves were personal to Kelli.  The star gazer is her sorority family flower, and was given to her from her big sis on the night of her initiation.  Purple has been her favorite color since childhood, and she was fond of the vibrant colors of the peacock feather.  Kathy of Kathy’s cakes created both cakes.  The bride’s cake comprised of three square tiers, with different patterns on each.  “It was perfect and tasted great, too!”  The cake topper was a silver scripted “C” with peacock feathers.  “The grooms cake was Justin’s vision,” explains Kelli.  A bottle of Jameson and a box of fondant-rolled cigars rested on top of a chocolate devil’s food cake.  Along the base of the cake were chocolate dipped tuxedo strawberries.

The uber-talented Tricoast Photography captured the moments of Kelli and Justin’s wedding.  As seen below, the two danced their first dance song to Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars, a song that the couple “both have such a strong connection to the lyrics and what the song is really saying.”

Heather’s Glen wishes a life full of happiness and love to the vivacious and beautiful Mr. and Mrs. Curran!

Bridezillas

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Frequently asked questions at Heather’s Glen:

What is the bar policy?  Is set up and clean up included?  Do you have a list of nearby hotels where we can block rooms?  Do you think he’s the one for me?  (Okay, that last one isn’t true).  And then of course, one of the most popular questions we receive:

Do you have any bridezillas?

To which I typically respond that every bride is a bridezilla about some detail or another, but no, we very rarely attract the kind of bride that is presented on the popular television show.  Not only is Bridezilla behavior painful for those around her, it can also land you in jail.  No, I’m serious.  Read the story below, and let me know what you think.
